Prior to 2000, the specific gravity of SMC materials used in industry was about 1.8. In recent years, the composition of the composition is the condition of traditional materials, SMC research institutions, and suppliers to reduce the specific gravity of the material to 1.4, and then replace the filler or glass fiber mats so that the specific gravity is further reduced to 1.2, and some even reached 1.0 or less. Products with a particular gravity of 1.2 have been put into commercial applications.
Some companies have led the way in lightweight SMC materials, with mass-produced products having a relative density ratio of 1.2. They have increased the density of their products from 1.9 in the early stages to 1.6 in 2014 and 1.2 in 2016, reducing production costs. Processing costs for all SMC replacement materials are 50-70% lower than the cost of stamped steel or aluminum.
Besides, some companies need to improve SMC products' light weight, functional products up to the world's advanced level. In terms of lightweight, the mainstream SMC products are mostly made of traditional materials, with a proportion of about 1.5. They are modified resin to get enhanced SMC materials, replacing the conventional unsaturated polyester resin, and then with different ratios of materials to get different SMC reinforcing materials, increasing the degree of the matrix to withstand the amount of glass fiber, so that the amount of glass fiber up to 300 to 400% of the amount of resin, with high strength, is a better structural SMC.
At present, some enterprises are in the advanced international level of SMC material enhancement performance. However, there is still much room for improvement in the relative density of the material proportion. By contrast with the advanced lightweight technology, the filler in the CaCO3 replaced by lighter glass beads and the glass fiber felt replaced by more delicate carbon fiber is the direction of development of lightweight SMC materials.
