1. The importance of temperature to the SMC molding process
The temperature here refers to the specified temperature during the moulding of SMC FRP progress. The parameters of SMC moulding process confirm the heat transfer conditions of the SMC FRP to the materials in the mold cavity, which has a decisive role on the melting, flowing and curing course of the materials.
2. The influence of temperature on the SMC FRP moulding process
The temperature change in the SMC moulding process is relatively complicated. On account that the plastic is a kind of poor conductor of heat and the temperature between the center and the edge of the material varies greatly at the beginning of the moulding stage, the curing and crosslinking reaction start at a different time in the inner and outer layers of the material.
The temperature of the SMC moulding process depends on the exothermic peak temperature and curing rate of the curing system. Generally, the temperature slightly lower than the curing peak temperature is taken as the curing temperature range and it is commonly 135℃~170℃ confirmed by experiments. The system with a fast curing rate should be set at a lower temperature, and the system with a slow curing rate should be at a higher temperature.
If the temperature of SMC is too low, there are both high viscosity and poor fluidity of the melted material. And because it is hard to proceed the crosslinking reaction, the product is of poor strength, dim appearance, and mold sticking and ejection deformation occur during the demoulding step.
